Getting started

Sign in with your RAM user, switch to the Philippines (Manila) region and find the two instances you will work with.

Your credential sheet

Your credential sheet has these values. Keep it open during the lab.

FieldExampleUsed in
Participant IDwsNNEverywhere: type it into the sidebar box now
RAM logon URLhttps://signin.alibabacloud.com/<alias>.onaliyun.com/login.htmSign-in
RAM user name and passwordwsNN@<alias>.onaliyun.comSign-in
Source instancewsNN-source / i-5ts...Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4
Destination instancewsNN-smc-target / i-5ts...Modules 3 and 4
Instance root password(secret)Workbench login, for both instances

Step 1 - Sign in as your RAM user

  1. Open the RAM logon URL from your credential sheet in a private or incognito browser window. This keeps your own Alibaba Cloud session, if you have one, separate.
  2. Enter your RAM user name and click Next. Enter your password and click Log On.
  3. If you are asked to change the password, choose a new one and keep it safe for the rest of the event.
  4. The user name in the top-right corner of the console now shows wsNN@... and RAM User.

Step 2 - Select the Philippines (Manila) region

  1. In the top navigation bar of the console, open the region selector.
  2. Choose Philippines (Manila). Each console (ECS, SMC) remembers its own region, so check the selector every time you open a new console.

Step 3 - Find your instances

  1. Open the ECS console: ecs.console.alibabacloud.com. In the left menu, choose Instances & Images > Instances.
  2. In the search box, filter by instance name wsNN. You should see two instances:
    NameRole in the labExpected status
    wsNN-sourceThe "on-premises" server you migrateRunning
    wsNN-smc-targetThe destination SMC overwritesRunning
  3. Write down the instance ID and the private IP address of both instances. You will need them later.
You can see more than you can change

Your RAM user can list every instance in the account, but it can only connect to and operate your own two instances. If you get a permission error while you work on wsNN-source or wsNN-smc-target, tell your facilitator.

Step 4 - Open the SMC console

  1. Open the SMC console: smc.console.alibabacloud.com.
  2. If you see a Go to authorize message, do not click it. Your RAM user cannot complete it. Ask your facilitator.
  3. In the left menu, under Migrate to Cloud, click Server Migration. This is where you work for the rest of the lab.
  4. Check that no row named wsNN-source is in the list yet. You import it in Module 2. Rows for other participants may already be there; leave them alone.
Why "Server Migration"

SMC also has a Cross-account/Same-account Migration page that imports ECS instances directly. You use Server Migration instead, because that is how you would import a real on-premises server or a VM from another cloud.

Checkpoint
  • You are signed in as your RAM user, in the Philippines (Manila) region.
  • You can see wsNN-source and wsNN-smc-target and have noted their IDs and private IPs.
  • You have the SMC console open on Migrate to Cloud > Server Migration.
